Guba travel guide
A northern region of apple orchards and mountain villages, and the gateway to Khinalug.
Guba lies at the foot of the Greater Caucasus, about 170 km north of Baku. It is known for its apple orchards, carpet-weaving tradition and cool summers.
The real draw is the mountains: deep canyons, forested valleys and Khinalug, one of the highest inhabited villages in the region. Guba is also home to Krasnaya Sloboda (Red Settlement), the historic village of the Mountain Jews.
Things to see
Khinalug
An ancient village at about 2,300 m with its own language. The surrounding highlands are ideal for hiking.
Red Settlement
A town on the Gudyalchay river where Mountain Jews have lived for centuries, with synagogues, a museum and a bridge facing central Guba.
Tangaalti Canyon and Qachrash Forest
A narrow canyon cut by the Velvelechay river and a dense forest nearby — popular for family walks and picnics.
When to go
May to October is best for mountain routes; autumn is apple-picking season. In winter, snow can make the road to Khinalug difficult.
Getting there
It is a 2.5–3 hour drive from Baku. Regular buses run from Baku International Bus Terminal to Guba; from there a taxi or tour is the easiest way to Khinalug.
Frequently asked questions
Can I visit Khinalug on my own?
The road is paved and passable by car in summer, but it has many hairpin bends. If you plan to hike around the village, going with a guide is recommended.
Can I see Guba in one day?
Day tours from Baku usually combine Red Settlement with Tangaalti or Khinalug. Staying one night makes the trip far more relaxed.
