Khizi travel guide
The closest mountains to Baku: red-striped hills, Altiaghaj forests and the Caspian shore.
Khizi is just 100 km north-west of Baku and a favourite escape for anyone who wants to get out of the city quickly. Within a short distance, semi-desert gives way to forested mountains.
Its best-known sight is the red and pink layered hills. The region is also known as the birthplace of the poet Mikayil Mushfig.
Things to see
Red Mountains
Colourful slopes formed by layers of clay and sand — a favourite with photographers, especially at sunset.
Altiaghaj National Park
A protected area of oak and hornbeam forest, cool springs and quiet walking trails.
Caspian coast
The seaward side of the region offers quiet beaches and holiday spots in summer.
When to go
March to June and September to November. The slopes turn green in spring and the forests change colour in autumn; midsummer is hot in the lowlands.
Getting there
It is about a 1.5-hour drive from Baku. Public transport is infrequent, so a car or tour is more convenient.
Frequently asked questions
Is Khizi good for a day trip?
Yes. Being so close to Baku, Khizi is one of the most popular day-tour destinations.
Is hiking in the Red Mountains difficult?
The main viewpoints are reached on short, easy paths. After rain the clay gets slippery, so wear sturdy shoes.
