Shamakhi travel guide
The former capital of Shirvan: an ancient Friday Mosque, the Seven Domes and vineyards.
Shamakhi lies on a foothill plateau about 120 km west of Baku. For centuries it was the capital of the Shirvanshahs and has been rebuilt after many earthquakes.
Alongside its monuments, the region is known for winemaking and for the country’s main astrophysical observatory. Shamakhi sits on the road to Gabala and Shaki, so it is often the first stop on the route.
