Guided ascents of the 3,000–4,400 m peaks of the Greater Caucasus.

Azerbaijan's peaks sit at the eastern end of the Greater Caucasus. Bazarduzu (4,466 m), Shahdag (4,243 m) and Tufandag (4,191 m) are the country's highest points; Kapaz (3,066 m) above Goygol is the most popular summit done as a single day. Almost none of them are technical climbs — they are long, steep walks made hard by altitude.
Every departure here belongs to a local operator registered on Gotabiat: each date has its own price and guide, and the booking goes straight to the operator. Route length, total ascent and difficulty are shown on the card.
In summer the Guba–Qusar side opens up: Shahdag, Bazarduzu, Tufandag and the peaks around Khinalig. In the Goygol region, Kapaz is the most walked route of the whole season. The 2,000–2,500 m hills around Ismayilli and Lahij are a sensible first step into the format.
The high peaks are snow-free only between July and September; October turns quickly. The first half of September is the most stable window — clear air and comfortable walking temperatures. Winter ascents need mountaineering equipment and are announced separately.
A day summit typically means 1,000–1,600 m of ascent, so previous long-walk experience matters. Ankle-supporting boots, a windproof jacket, at least 2 litres of water and an insulating layer are the minimum. On the summit it is usually 10–15°C colder than at the trailhead.
Most routes need no rope or helmet — they are steep walks. But you do need to be ready for 6–10 hours of effort; first-timers are better off starting with a moderate hiking tour.
Some routes towards Shahdag, Bazarduzu and Khinalig fall inside the border zone. In those cases the operator arranges the permit in advance and will ask you for ID details.
Summit tours usually start at 16, but each tour sets its own rule. The exact limit is shown in the age-restriction field on the tour page.
The guide may shorten the route or move the departure. Booking costs nothing up front, and cancelling is free up to 48 hours before departure.
