The waterfalls of Astara: one region, four different routes
The Talysh mountains have the highest density of waterfalls in Azerbaijan. There are several routes around Astara and they are not all of the same difficulty — the choice should match your legs.
Avyarud — 4 km, moderate
The most compact option. It starts from the village of Palikash and covers just 4 km. The easiest entry point for a first visit to Astara.

The village of Sim: Dustagkhana and Shirhal — moderate
After reaching the village of Sim you approach the waterfalls by mountain vehicle, then the walk begins. In spring the water is at its fullest — April and May are the best months for this route.
→ Astara, Sim village trek
Shi waterfall — 14 km, moderate to hard
The trail passes through Talysh forest to the 60-metre Shi waterfall. Along the way there are views of the villages of Digo and Ayvarud. It is a long day: the meeting is at 6 a.m., and reaching the waterfall takes serious walking.

Sim ➝ Siyov ➝ Bandasar — 17.5 km, hard
Three villages, one day, 17.5 kilometres. Citrus groves, village roads and the forests of Hirkan National Park. The meeting time is 04:45 — which tells you everything about the length of the route.

Three subtleties of Astara's routes
Humidity. The Talysh forest is the most humid place in the country. Once you sweat, your shirt does NOT dry — keep a spare one in your pack.
Slipperiness. The rocks around the waterfalls are always wet and mossy. Here the sole of your shoe is the most important piece of equipment.
Leeches and ticks. In a humid forest you meet them in season. Long socks, trouser legs tucked into the socks and a body check after the tour are standard practice.
The best thing about Astara is not the waterfalls — it is the village roads running between the citrus groves. Do not rush the route.
