Shepherd dogs in the mountains: why a barking dog does not attack, and what to do
On plateau routes (Mikhtoken, Sheki Khan plateau, around Kryz) meeting shepherd dogs is unavoidable. These dogs are not aggressive — they are guardians. Their job is to protect the herd, and they react because you are approaching it.
What to do
1. Stop. Standing still signals to the dog that you are not a threat.
2. Turn sideways and do not stare. Direct eye contact is a challenge in dog language. A side profile is a calming signal.
3. Speak calmly. Do not shout. A low, calm voice settles both the dog and you.
4. Back away, keeping your face towards it. Move slowly away from the herd. You may turn and walk, but without hurrying.
5. Look for the shepherd. If one is nearby, call out — they can recall the dogs in an instant.
What not to do
❌ Run. The most dangerous reaction. A running object triggers the chase instinct, and the dog is faster than you.
❌ Throw a stone, or bend down to pick one up. Bending is an attack signal to a dog — the situation gets worse immediately.
❌ Shout and wave your arms.
❌ Walk through the herd. Change your line and go around it — 200 extra metres is cheaper than a problem.
Trekking poles
Do not raise a pole like a weapon. But holding it low at your side helps you feel calm — and your calm transfers to the dog.
When walking in a group
- Close up: a group that stays together worries the dog less
- Put the most frightened person in the middle
- Do not pick children up — that increases the dog's attention; just hold their hand
For those who come after you
Do not feed the dogs. A dog that gets food once heads straight for the next group's packs, and that becomes a problem for both hikers and the shepherd.
Shepherd dogs are part of the mountains of Azerbaijan. Learning how to behave around them is far easier than avoiding them.
