Diri Baba and Şamaxı: a mausoleum built into a cliff

Driving the Baku–Şamaxı road near Maraza, you see a strange structure on the face of a cliff: the building does not lean against the rock, it is set inside it. This is the Diri Baba mausoleum.
About the building
The mausoleum dates to the 15th century, the Shirvanshah period. Its architecture is unique in Azerbaijan: a two-storey domed building placed inside a natural rock cavity, with its upper part running directly into the rock mass. Seen from below, it is hard to tell where the building ends and the cliff begins.
The name is connected with local belief — the word "diri" comes from the shrine tradition here. The building today is both an architectural monument and a place of pilgrimage.
Inside, stairs lead upward; on the upper floor there is a small hall and the section merging into the rock. Fragments of inscriptions remain on the walls.
What is nearby
Diri Baba on its own is a half-hour stop — so it is planned as part of a route.
- The Qobustan rock art. On the way, on the UNESCO list; petroglyphs tens of thousands of years old, and mud volcanoes.
- Mud volcanoes. A large share of the world's mud volcanoes are in Azerbaijan, and the Qobustan area is the densest field.
- Şamaxı. The Juma mosque, the Yeddi Günbəz mausoleums, and wineries.
- The Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory — higher up the road, a visit in its own right.
- Hiking routes. The Qobustan–Şamaxı belt has waterfall and cave routes: Xalıt waterfall, Yaşıl lake and the Nərimankənd caves.
A suggested one-day plan
- Early departure from Baku.
- The Qobustan rock art museum and the mud volcanoes.
- The Diri Baba mausoleum.
- Afternoon hike — towards Xalıt waterfall or the Nərimankənd caves.
- Return in the evening via Şamaxı.
This is one of the densest of the one-day trips out of Baku: history, geology and hiking in a single day.
Practical notes
- Diri Baba is a shrine — observe the dress and behaviour rules; a head covering may be required for women.
- Entry is a symbolic fee.
- The area has no shade; it gets scorching in the afternoon in summer.
- You cannot reach the mud volcanoes in an ordinary car — local 4x4 drivers wait at the entrance.
