Mastdargah (2743 m): the ideal route for your first summit

"I want to climb a peak, but where do I start?" — that is the question we hear most. The answer is usually Mastdargah.
Why this route
2743 metres is a serious altitude, yet the walk itself is a climb of only 3 km. The reason: 4x4 mountain vehicles take you up to the village of Kryz, so the trek starts high already.
In other words you get the real summit feeling — thin air, an open panorama, the sense of being up there — without a multi-day expedition.
Programme: Mastdargah peak and Kryz waterfall.
How the day goes
Meeting at 06:30, Quba by 10:00, then two hours of 4x4 road to Kryz. The summit walk runs between 12:00 and 14:00, followed by a lunch break, and on the way back a home-style tea table in the village of Kryz.
About the 4x4 road
The road to Kryz is narrow and bumpy. A few practical tips for those prone to motion sickness:
- Try to sit in the front
- Take your medication 30 minutes before setting off (not en route)
- Avoid a heavy breakfast, but do not travel completely hungry
- Look far out of the window, at the horizon
After the summit: Kryz
Kryz is one of the ancient mountain villages of the Caucasus and has a language of its own. The tea table in a village house is part of the tour programme, and for many it turns out to be the best memory of the day.
The next step
If Mastdargah felt comfortable, the logical next rungs are:
- Mikhtoken plateau and Suvar — 9 km, moderate
- Niyaldag peak — 11 km
- Heydar Aliyev peak — your first summit with a tent
