Tufandag (4191 m): a three-day expedition to the country's fourth-highest peak
Tufandag — Azerbaijan's fourth-highest peak, 4191 metres. From the top you can see Bazarduzu, Shahdag, Zafar and Bazaryurd all at once. There are few places in the country that offer that view.
How the three days are structured
From the village of Khinalig a 4x4 climbs to Shahyaylag. From there it is 6.4 km on foot to the campsite near Lake Tufan. The night is spent in tents; in the morning the 3.4 km summit push begins.
The long day is the second one: you walk to the lake carrying full weight, while summit day is with a light pack but on a steep slope.
Programme: Tufandag summit trek (4191 m).
Difficulty: 4.5–5 / 5
This is not the route for "let this be my first hike". The group is limited to 14 people and documents are required in advance — it is a border zone and permits take time. You need to register several weeks before the tour.
A few honest words about camp life
- Night temperatures approach zero even in summer. Bring a sleeping bag with a comfort rating of 0 °C or lower.
- A sleeping mat under the tent is essential — cold comes from below, not from above.
- Water comes from the lake or the stream; a filter or purification tablets are useful for refilling.
- There is no phone signal. Tell your family in advance that you will be out of contact for two days.
Who it is for
For someone who has already covered a 12–15 km route with 800–1000 metres of ascent over one or two days. Mucu–Lahij (15 km, 1020 m of ascent) is a good yardstick: if you finish that comfortably, you can start preparing for Tufandag.
The summit is not an obligation. Turning back when the weather worsens is experience, not failure. The mountain stays where it is.
