Bazarduzu (4466m): The Complete Summit Trekking Guide

The highest point of Azerbaijan is Bazarduzu, standing at 4466 meters. It does not require technical mountaineering skills, but it is far from "simple": it means three days, high altitude, and coming face-to-face with the elements.
How the Route is Structured
The classic route starts from the village of Khinalug. From there, you ascend to Shahyaylagi by 4x4 vehicle, followed by an approximately 4 km trek to reach the campsite. The night is spent in tents, and the summit push begins early the next morning, taking around 6 hours.
This structure has its logic: the camp serves as both a rest stop and an acclimatization point. Trying to ascend from Baku to 4466 meters in a single day is both impossible and dangerous.
The tour program on our website is for three days: Conquering the Bazarduzu Summit.
What to Expect on Summit Day
- Early start. You set out around 3–4 AM to ensure you can descend from the summit before the afternoon weather changes.
- Scree and steep slopes. Most of the route is not a stable trail—you walk on loose scree, making your footing slip.
- Wind. The wind near the summit is harsh. Even on the warmest summer day, a windproof jacket must be in your backpack.
What to Pack
- A 30–40 liter well-fitted backpack
- High-ankle trekking boots (broken-in, not brand new)
- Three-layer clothing system: moisture-wicking base layer, warm mid-layer, windproof outer layer
- At least 2 liters of water + electrolytes
- Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen — at 4000 meters, UV rays are significantly stronger than at lower altitudes
- Headlamp with spare batteries
The most frequently forgotten item is sunglasses. Light reflected off snowy slopes can cause severe eye burns in just a few hours.
Top Three Common Mistakes
- Leaving physical preparation to the last week. You prepare for a summit with a month of regular hiking, not an overnight whim.
- Overloaded backpack. Every unnecessary 500 grams feels twice as heavy during the final 300 meters.
- Wandering away from the group. Fog can roll in within 10 minutes, making you lose the trail.
If you have time to prepare, start with one-day routes such as Mastdargah Peak or Mikhtokan Plateau — giving both your legs and lungs a chance to adapt.
