İlisu National Park: waterfalls, gorges and the forests of Qax

İlisu National Park lies in the Qax district, on the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus. It is medium-sized, but in terms of route density it is one of the most productive parks: from the entrance you can reach a waterfall, a narrow gorge and forest trails within a few hours.
The village of İlisu
The park takes its name from the village at its gate. İlisu was historically the centre of a sultanate and is still known for its medieval bridge, the Sumuq tower and its stone architecture. The village itself is a reason to spend time there before and after a route.
Nearby are sulphur hot springs — the "İlisu baths" — a very logical stop after a hike.
Main routes
The Qoçyataq waterfall. The park's best-known objective. The route was closed for many years for various reasons and has now reopened; it is done as a day hike. The trail climbs along the gorge with several river crossings — expect your boots to get wet.
Surrounding hills and viewpoints. Shorter routes, suitable for half-day formats.
Forest trails. Oak, beech and hornbeam forest; shaded and cool even in summer.
When to go
- April–June: the waterfalls are at their strongest (snowmelt).
- September–November: the most settled weather, autumn colours.
- Summer: possible, the forest keeps things cool, but water levels drop.
- Winter: the lower routes stay open; a frozen waterfall has its own beauty, but the trail is slippery.
One characteristic of the region: Qax and Zaqatala are among the wettest parts of the country. Even when the forecast shows little rain, keep the rain jacket in your pack.
Practical notes
- Entry to the park is paid and registration is taken at the gate.
- On gorge routes water levels rise after rain; crossings become harder and the route is sometimes closed. A local guide makes that call for you.
- There are bears in the area. Walking noisily in dense forest is a practical measure here — more on that.
- The distance from Baku is around 350 km. A day tour means an early departure; over two days, Qax and Şəki are planned together.
Nearby
The Qax–Zaqatala–Şəki triangle fits easily into one weekend: Şəki, the Xan pasture hike, Qax, the Qoçyataq waterfall hike, the Qax camp: Qoçyataq waterfall and the İlisu baths.
