Difficulty grades: what does "moderate" mean and is it right for you?

The sentence "it is moderate difficulty" does not mean the same thing to everyone. To choose a route properly you need to look at three numbers: distance, ascent, duration.
What the three numbers mean
Distance is the least significant of them. Fifteen kilometres on the flat is easy; eight kilometres on a slope can be hard.
Elevation gain is the most important number. It is the total amount of climbing along the route. On the Mucu–Lahij route, for example, there are 1020 metres of ascent — and that number, more than the 15 km, is what defines the difficulty.
Duration reflects the pace of the group. A 9 km route taking 7 hours (Kuzun–Laza) means many stops, not slow walking.
A practical table
| Level | Distance | Ascent | Duration | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | 4–6 km | up to 200 m | 3–4 hours | Dilman waterfall |
| Moderate | 8–12 km | 300–700 m | 5–7 hours | Beybeyim mountain |
| Hard | 12–18 km | 700–1200 m | 7–9 hours | Mucu–Lahij |
| Extreme | multi-day | 1000 m+ / day | 2–3 days | Bazarduzu |
How to know your own level
A simple test: what is the longest route you have done in the last three months? Your next one should not be more than 30% bigger than that.
If 10 km feels comfortable → a 13 km route is fine.
If 10 km is a struggle → an 18 km route will be hard on you and on the group.
The value of being honest
When you register, describe your experience as it is. That matters not for you but for the group: when one person falls behind, the whole schedule shifts and sometimes the route is cut short.
A good operator will not let you onto a route that does not suit you — that is responsibility, not a refusal of service.
Seeing the numbers in advance
Some tours include a GPX track, so you can see the profile of the walk — how much climbing happens at which kilometre — before you go. More on that: What GPX is and how to read it.
