What is a GPX Track and How to Use It Before a Hike

GPX is a file format that stores route coordinates. Put simply: someone recorded a GPS track of a path they walked, allowing you to preview and follow it in advance.
What It Shows
The Line (Track). The actual route on the map — which valleys, ridges, or villages it passes through.
Elevation Profile. The most valuable part: a left-to-right graph showing how much elevation you gain at each kilometer. Knowing the steepest sections beforehand helps you pace yourself properly.
Total Distance and Elevation Gain. These are the primary numbers that determine the difficulty level.
What to Check Before the Hike
- Where is the steepest section? If it's right at the start, there won't be time to warm up — start slowly. If it's at the end, conserve your energy.
- How many ascents and descents are there? A "sawtooth" profile accumulates significant overall elevation gain and puts extra strain on your knees.
- What is the highest point? If it is above 2500 meters, weather changes and altitude factors come into play.
- Is the route a loop or out-and-back? On an out-and-back trail, you see the same path twice; on a loop, there are fewer bailout options along the way.
How to Open It on Your Phone
There are numerous free apps available to open GPX files. The most important step: download the map offline. There is no cell service in the mountains; without offline maps, the app will just display a blank screen.
Important Warning
A GPX track does not replace a guide. The file shows where the path was recorded, but:
- trails change under snow cover
- spring runoff and high water can make river crossings impassable
- local village paths change from year to year
Therefore, never separate from the group thinking "I have the GPS." The file is meant for tracking your way, not for pioneering a trail blindly.
Record Your Own Tracks
Recording your own GPS track during a hike is a great habit: years later, you'll know the exact route you completed and be able to share it with friends.
Route examples: Eh road – Gryz – Mastdargah – Mikhtokan – Laza (Gusar), Muju–Lahij, Ambil Lake.
