Hiking, trekking, mountaineering: what is the difference and where do you fit?

"We're going to the mountains" can mean anything from a few hours in the forest to a multi-day ice expedition. Separating the terms gives the most practical benefit when choosing a tour — because the preparation and equipment required are completely different.
Hiking
A walk of a few hours or one day on an existing trail. No overnight stay, no technical equipment.
What you need: good boots, water, a light pack, clothing suited to the weather.
Typical example: Ağsu, Dilman waterfall, İsmayıllı, the Qalacıq hike.
Trekking
A multi-day walk. Overnight stays in a tent or a village house, with the route going from one point to another. The physical demand is higher because the load repeats day after day.
What you need: a large pack, a sleeping system, a food plan, route navigation.
Typical example: multi-day pasture and village-to-village routes.
Peak hiking / scrambling
The objective is a specific summit. It requires no technical mountaineering, but the slopes are steep, some sections need your hands (this is scrambling), and altitude becomes a factor.
What you need: good physical condition, the ability to read weather, sometimes acclimatisation.
Typical example: Məstdərgah peak, Tufandağ, Bazardüzü.
Mountaineering
Mountain activity requiring rope, crampons, an ice axe and technical skill: ice and snow slopes, rock sections, protection systems.
What you need: a course, an experienced partner, serious equipment. This is not something you teach yourself.
Rock climbing
Separate from mountaineering: the objective is not a summit but the route itself. Bouldering, sport climbing and top-rope all belong here: Rock climbing areas in Azerbaijan.
Other terms
- Ski touring. Climbing on skis and descending ungroomed slopes. Avalanche knowledge is mandatory.
- Snowshoeing. Wide frames that let you walk on deep snow without sinking. The most accessible form of winter hiking.
- Canyoning. Descending a narrow gorge through the water; requires rope and neoprene. The summer version of some routes in the country comes close to this: Babadağ canyon.
- Via ferrata. Passage along metal rungs and cable fixed to rock. Not yet widespread in Azerbaijan.
- Fastpacking. Multi-day routes at running pace with a light pack.
Where do you fit
A simple question: how many weekends a year do you spend in the mountains?
- 2–5 times a year → hiking is your format; do not buy gear, invest in boots.
- 1–2 times a month → time to move to peak hikes; poles, a good pack, a layer system.
- Once a week or more → trekking and winter formats open up; by now you should own your equipment.
